I think the issue of re-organizing our spatial planning cuts both ways. Even rural areas use many inputs (eg. diesel) which come from far away and which could be produced closer. Some ongoing research by WWF here shows that food transport accounts for over 40% of our transport energy usage. That is quite shocking.  But part of the problem here is that women do not have access to land. They move to cities because it is where they can make a living. So reworking our spatial planning does also have a social justice aspect.
