Criterion One: Climate versus Development – a social and gender approach

Carbon-intensive development is increasing complexities and can have a disempowering effect on people despite possible material improvements. LCD strategies need to take social and gender issues fully into consideration from the very beginning, ensuring quality of life and a decent standard of living. It is neither a climate first nor a development first approach. By recognising the link between energy and the fulfilment of human needs, as well as the link to poverty and gender inequality, a social and gender perspective on LCD means taking a liveability or buen vivir approach.
